Who Gets the Family Pet During a Divorce in Oklahoma?
In Oklahoma, the question of who gets the family pet during a divorce can be a difficult one to answer. While pets are beloved members of our families, the court typically views them as property to be divided. There are no visitation rights or shared custody arrangements for pets, unless agreed upon by both parties. Instead, the court will apply a fair and equitable test to determine where the pet should go. Just like dividing a table or a TV, the court will decide which party should be awarded the pet based on what is fair in their eyes. It's important to consider this when going through a divorce involving a beloved furry family member. Read more »

Does Visitation Differ During the Summer in Oklahoma?
Hey, I'm Oklahoma Dads' Lawyer Heath Davis. With summer coming up, I wanted to touch base on what visitation looks like in the summer. Most courts in Oklahoma have a holiday schedule. This includes things like Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, and of course, summer visitation. In most counties in Oklahoma, summer visitation is a 50-50 visitation schedule. Some people do it on a, one parent has the children the month of June, the other parent has them the month of July. Some people do a week on week off. That's what the typical schedule is in most counties. So summer visitation is definitely an increase in time if you have every other weekend or you have less than 50-50 on a yearly basis. Thanksgiving visitation, Christmas visitation, spring break, those are typically alternated. Those can be split in multiple ways. But with summer coming up, I just wanted to give you that information. Most courts do allow for a true 50-50 split. That's a good test exercise to see if 50-50 works and if it's something that's beneficial for your kids.
