Parenting Coordinators Are Neutral Third Parties to the Action
Video Transcribed: I am a Tulsa father’s rights attorney. Parenting coordinators in Oklahoma are most useful in joint custody situations or in the early stages of a paternity or divorce case when you’re establishing a custody setup. For dysfunctioning joint custody setups, depending on the level of dysfunction and the ability for it to be healed in the transformative processes of mental health counseling, as opposed to somebody just looking at it and saying, “A decision needs to be made in the best interest of the kid right now, and you two can’t get your heads together.”
That’s kind of where you’re at. So the way I would advise clients to look at parenting coordinators as far as the psychological versus the lawyer is, do you need somebody who is going to cut out the nonsense, not care as much about the feelings and come to solutions, or do you want somebody who is going to build your two ability to co-parent together in a more transformative process?
And that would be your mental health professional as opposed to your lawyer. Honestly, parenting coordinators are great they probably should be ordered more often. Joint custody should be ordered more often, we should be using parenting coordinators more often.
But again, this is an added layer of expense. If you’re going to go the parenting coordinator route and you want more of a psychological, you don’t need a doctor in my opinion. And LPC is fine, then that’ll cut costs significantly, potentially even in half. Lawyers, parenting coordinators are going to spend less time usually. So they are cheaper in that regard.
