Hire an Attorney
Video Transcribed: Hello, my name is Jason Lile and I am a Dad’s attorney in Tulsa. I wanted to talk to you today about a concern that many fathers and men that I have as clients have in terms of their divorce case or their paternity case. And that is how do I make sure that I get equal time or more time with my kids? One thing I’d like to point out to you is that in Oklahoma, the law starts out as a default that parents will split time. Now, of course, there are many considerations the court takes into account that they would move off of that 50/50 mark.
However, I will often counsel my clients that are fathers to say that it’s very important that you and your attorney take time to consider your work schedule, your home living situation, and present your situation in a way to the court that will allow you to spend actually more time with your kids than before you decided to end your marriage or your relationship with the other parent.
Specifically, if an attorney takes a good look at your schedule and your work schedule and comes up with a plan with you that can be allowed to be presented to the court in a fashion that says, “Hey, I’m going to be available for this child or these children during those times I’m going to set aside.
Here’s my support system while they are with me during that time, or he or she is with me,” the reality is that is a process that you can go through that will allow you to focus your time and your resources on your child or your children and end up out on the other side of the case or during the case that you’ll be spending more time with your children than you were before you decided to end the relationship.
It’s this type of insight and experience that a good attorney can bring to you in litigation so that you’re not focusing on the wrong things. You’re not focusing on things that, after the fact, will be a reality that will equal you not spending as much time with your kids.
