It’s Difficult to Avoid Child Support Unless an Adoption Takes Place
Video Transcribed: Hi, I’m a fathers’ rights lawyer in Tulsa, and I’m here discussing fatherhood and father’s rights. We do get a lot of questions here about father’s rights. One of them being, can I sign away my rights to not pay child support in Oklahoma? The answer is maybe.
The reality of it is, is that that’s a serious decision that you really need to consider. But at the same time, it is a possibility. If there was an adoptive parent, the court will make you pay child support even if you don’t have rights to that child, until there is an adoptive parent who takes on that responsibility.
A guardianship will not viscerate your requirement to pay child support. Only an adoption will, which terminates your rights and provides that somebody else is going to do it.
And the courts really find that the best interest of the children is served when there is a father paying child support or a mother paying child support, in the cases of a non-custodial mother.
And so, it’s going to be very difficult for you to avoid child support unless an adoption takes place. So, if you’ve got any questions about adoption, with or without consent, or how child support ends when one of those is conducted, why don’t you give us a call.
